Here at Performance Learning, we get asked ‘what is exam coaching?’ all the time by parents and students. More often than not, they’ve heard of this practice that has the ability to boost grades by two levels in a matter of weeks, but they’re not quite sure what it is – or how it can help them.

What is exam coaching, in a nutshell?

Exam coaching is a study aid that supplements traditional revision. It goes beyond subject content to address the key issues that students come up against when preparing for exams.

Rather than focusing on what you need to learn, exam coaching focuses on how you need to learn. It teaches students exam techniques that will deliver results, as well as how to focus under pressure.

It doesn’t just stop there, though. Exam coaching also teaches youngsters how to manage exam stress and their wellbeing around exam season.

That’s because mentally strong students who believe in themselves always yield better grades than those who lack confidence. Trust us, we see it all the time here at Performance Learning.

Understanding how exam coaching works

It can be easy to confuse exam coaching with tutoring, but they serve different purposes.

Tutoring focuses on filling subject-specific knowledge gaps. On the flip side, exam coaching builds the mindset, strategies and habits students need to perform across all their subjects. A tutor might explain a tricky science topic, but an exam coach takes a wider view. It teaches students how to handle multiple exams in one week and how to stay calm when the paper is in front of them. It is about preparing students with the mindset, strategies and habits they need to perform well in exams across all their subjects.

A good exam coach will help a student understand how they learn best, build routines that make revision less stressful and develop confidence under pressure. It is about giving students the tools to manage their workload, rather than just cramming information.

Why exam coaching matters

Exams are not just about knowledge. They are about timing, focus, organisation and confidence. Many bright students fall short of their potential not because they lack ability, but because they struggle with these other skills. Exam coaching addresses this gap.

It is particularly valuable at GCSE and A Level stage, when the demands on students increase. By this point, students are juggling more subjects, more content and the pressure of results that shape their next steps. Having someone guide them through proven methods can make all the difference.

Exam coaching teaches study skills

One of the main things exam coaching focuses on is study skills. These are the techniques and strategies students use to learn and retain information effectively.

Strong study skills make revision more efficient, reduce stress and boost confidence in the exam hall. For example, an exam coach might teach a student how to break down large topics into manageable chunks, how to use active recall rather than just rereading notes or how to set up a realistic revision timetable. Study skills also include things like time management, note-taking techniques and the ability to evaluate what revision methods are working.

Signs your child could benefit from exam coaching

If you are wondering whether exam coaching is right for your child, there are a few common signs to look out for.

Perhaps your child understands their subjects but struggles to organise revision. Or maybe they panic in exams despite knowing the material. Some students simply lack confidence and need someone to help them believe in their ability. Others are stuck using ineffective revision techniques and are not sure how to improve.

These are all areas where exam coaching can make a noticeable difference. By focusing on study skills and confidence, an exam coach helps students feel more in control of their learning.

Reaping the rewards of of exam coaching

The benefits of exam coaching go beyond grades. Yes, students are more likely to reach potential and do so with confidence, but they also gain skills that last far beyond school. Among these is time management, goal setting and resilience.

Parents who invest in one of our Performance Learning packages often notice their child becoming more independent too. Rather than constantly needing reminders to revise, students start to take more responsibility for their own learning. That shift in attitude can be just as valuable as any extra marks in the exam hall.

Ready to find an exam coach?

If you are curious about what exam coaching could offer, the first step is to look for a programme or service that matches your child’s needs. Some students benefit from one-to-one sessions, while others thrive in small groups where they can learn alongside peers. We offer both options here at Performance Learning.

As the demands of school life grow, more families are turning to exam coaching as a way to help their children feel prepared, capable and ready for the challenges ahead. For many, it is the missing link between knowing the material and actually performing well under pressure.
