It’s almost upon us: the mighty A Level results day 2025.

No matter what year it happens, this day is one of the biggest moments in your education so far.

It’s a day that brings relief and excitement, but it’s also bound to feel nerve-racking.

Whatever happens, knowing exactly what to expect can make the day less stressful.

This guide, designed by the team at Performance Learning, takes you through what to expect and what to do next, no matter what your grade outcome is…

When is A Level results day 2025?

In England, Northern Ireland and Wales, A Level results day is Thursday 14 August. In Scotland, SQA results were already released on Tuesday 5 August.

You can collect your results from your school or college any time from 8am, or whenever they open. Ask a teacher or check your institute’s website for full details.

Preparing for A Level results day

Planning ahead will help you stay calm on the big day. At Performance Learning, we encourage our students to consider all options before results arrive, especially if you think you might need to use Clearing.

Clearing is how universities and other higher education providers fill any places they still have on their courses.

It is open to you whether your grades are higher, lower or exactly what you expected. It is also an option if you decide you want to change where or what you study.

If you need to use Clearing you will need your UCAS ID, your clearing number (which appears on UCAS Hub) and contact numbers for universities you are interested in.

Prep for Clearing like a pro

Clearing might be something you want to do, or are forced to do.

Beforehand, practice short interview style answers so you are ready to speak to universities. You can ask a parent or friend to help with this, or even record yourself speaking to reassess and improve your pitch.

On the day make sure you have a fully charged phone, a quiet space to have these important phone calls and a solid internet connection.

Furthermore, have a copy of your personal statement to refer to if asked about your application.

Some universities now take Clearing enquiries only by web form, so be prepared for that as well.

What happens on A Level results day?

You can collect your results in person or sometimes receive them by email or post. Check your school’s procedure and opening times in advance.

UCAS receives your grades directly and updates your Hub from about 8.15am. However, the Hub will not show your exact grades. It will only confirm whether your firm or insurance choices have accepted you.

If your Hub has not updated by mid-morning, call your firm choice university. Look for their hotline number or call the general enquiries line and explain your situation.

If you have met your firm offer

Congratulations! The entire team here at Performance Learning are incredibly proud.

Once your UCAS Hub status changes to ‘unconditional’, you will receive a confirmation email from your firm choice.

Now, you can now focus on getting ready for university. This is the time to arrange accommodation, organise your finances and make the most of your last summer before the big move.

If you have not met your firm offer

If you missed your grades by only a few marks you might consider a review of marking. You should let your firm and insurance choices know if you do this.

If you are not accepted you can accept your insurance place, apply to other universities through Clearing, retake your A Levels or reapply next year.

If you have met your insurance offer

Well done from the team here at Performance Learning! You will receive a confirmation email to officiate this.

However, you will need to update your student finance details as your entitlement may change depending on where you will be studying.

Accommodation should be your next priority, as the sooner you arrange it, the more choice you will have.

If your grades are much lower than expected

First things first, this is totally okay and it is not a reflection of your intelligence. Exams test a moment in time, and results from them do not define you.

If you still want to go to university this year, then Clearing should be your next step. Our advice is to begin exploring places at universities you already know or have visited.

Other options include retaking your A Levels to reapply next year, or choosing an alternative route like an apprenticeship.

If you plan to retake your exams

If you had your heart set on a certain university, this might be the best course of action.

To help you learn from past exam mistakes, the team at Performance Learning are here to help.

We support hundreds of students every year who, just like you, bounce back from difficult results and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Explore our revision support and exam coaching options today, so we can turn your next results day into a better one.

If you decide not to go to university

You may feel the pressure to make a huge decision on your future on results day or the days that follow, but you do not. You have plenty of time to figure out what you want to do.

Some students retake a year at sixth form or college, whilst others take a gap year, gain work experience or travel and then reapply later.

When you know your grades, you will have a clear picture of which courses you meet the requirements for. This can make applying next year easier.

What do the experts say about A Level results day 2025?

“Results day can be intense but it is only one step in your journey,” says Dr Tej Samani, exam coach and founder of Performance Learning, ahead of A Level results day 2025.

“Whether you get the grades you hoped for or not, there are always ways forward. If things go to plan you can start preparing for an exciting new chapter.

“If not, you still have choices that can lead to great opportunities. Stay calm, be ready to act and remember your results do not define you.”
