The moment you’ve been waiting for is nearly here: GCSE results day 2025.
Those exams might feel like you sat them yonks ago, but they’ve led you to one of the most important milestones in your school life.
After two years of hard work, the wait for your GCSE grades is finally over.
“It’s natural to feel nervous,” says Dr Tej Samani, exam coach and founder of Performance Learning. “Some students will be experiencing excitement and relief, whilst others will be riding a wave of anxiety.
“Whatever your feelings are, having a clear idea of what to expect on the day will make things feel less overwhelming.”
Here’s our complete Performance Learning guide to GCSE results day 2025…
When is GCSE results day 2025?
GCSE results day 2025 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is Thursday 21 August.
Most schools will open from 8am, but times can vary, so make sure you check your school’s website or social media channels if you’re not sure.
Schools usually confirm opening times for results days before the summer holidays.
The night before GCSE results day 2025
First things first, please remember that grades do not define you – and they certainly aren’t a reflection of your intelligence.
“The night before results day, try not to let nerves get the better of you,” advises Dr Tej. “Eat a tasty meal, drink plenty of water and aim for a good night’s sleep.
“Worrying late into the night will not change the outcome, but being well fed, hydrated and rested will help you think clearly when you open your results.”
If you are feeling particularly anxious, then talk to your parents or carers about how you feel. As the saying goes: a problem shared is a problem halved.
Performance Learning top tip: Decide how you want to open your results
Some students prefer to open their results surrounded by family or friends, whilst others even ask one of their loved ones to open the envelope for them. There’s also some students who prefer to do it quietly, on their own.
There is no right or wrong choice, so do what feels comfortable for you.
What to take with you to collect your results
We’d recommend not turning up to your school empty handed. In any case, bring photo identification (like your passport) as it may be required.
On a more personal note, take a charged phone so you can share your grades with family and friends after you’ve opened them.
If you have any home comforts that help soothe you when you’re feeling anxious, taking this along isn’t a bad idea either.
What if I can’t collect my GCSE results in person?
If you cannot attend GCSE results day 2025 in person (you might be on holiday, or have prior engagements), contact your school to find out how to collect your results.
They may send them by post or email, or allow a trusted person to collect them on your behalf. If someone is collecting results on your behalf, then they’ll need a signed letter and form of your ID to confirm their authorisation to do this.
Opening your envelope
This is the hardest moment of all for many students. As such, how you choose to do so is completely up to you.
You can choose to open your results immediately, or wait until you’re en route home. If it feels right, you might even wait until you’re at home and in your safe space.
If you want to open them ASAP but want privacy, go to your school early. The earlier you get there, the emptier it will be.
“Take your time when opening your results,” says Dr Tej. “Whether the grades call for celebration or you end up feeling grade disappointment, it’s important to remember that the numbers on the paper are only part of your journey.”
If your results are not what you hoped for
As we’ve already mentioned, your grades do not define you.
So, if your grades aren’t as high as you’d hoped, you don’t need to worry… and you certainly don’t need to panic.
GCSE results day 2025 will not define the rest of your life. If things have not gone to plan, you still have several options.
Option 1: Appealing your grades
If a grade seems unusually low or close to a boundary, speak to your teacher or your head of year. They can offer guidance on how to get your paper reviewed.
If you are a private candidate, contact the exam board directly or through the school that entered you.
In an ideal scenario, you should appeal the grades on results day, to give you the best chance of a remark.
Option 2: Resitting your GCSE exams
Thousands of students resit their GCSE exams every year, and it’s something we coach many through at Performance Learning.
If you do not achieve at least a grade 4 or 5 in English or maths, you will need to retake these, with the first round of resits taking place in November.
Other subjects can be retaken the following summer. The ones you choose to resit might depend on the industry you want to work in in the future.
Some schools and colleges allow you to start A Levels while preparing for resits, but this depends on your circumstances.
Option 3: Changing subjects, courses or education provider
If you have not met the requirements to study your chosen A Levels or college course, speak to the education institution you hoped to attend. They may still offer you a place on your chosen course, or on alternative courses.
On the other hand, if you performed better than expected, you might want to consider switching to subjects that reflect your new strengths or ambitions.
If your chosen college or school cannot offer you suitable courses for post-GCSE study, explore other local options. Entry requirements and subject availability vary, so you may find a better fit elsewhere.
Ready for GCSE results day 2025?
GCSE results day 2025 is a big moment, but it does not define you or your story.
Good and bad grades both open doors to the future, just in different ways. What matters most is how you use the opportunities that follow.
“Take the day as a milestone rather than a verdict,” encourages Dr Tej. “Celebrate what went well, reflect on what could improve and remember that your journey continues.”
