The fresh school year is finally here. Hopefully you had a relaxing summer (with some fun thrown in, of course) and are ready to tackle the next 10 months. You might be sitting exams this year, or gearing up for them in the coming years. Whatever position you’re at in your academic journey, our back to school guide is here to help.
Look, we get it. The end of summer always creeps up faster than expected, and suddenly it’s time to think about new subjects, new teachers and new challenges. The good news is that September is always an exciting time. With the right approach, you can have your best academic year yet – and even learn some study skills that you’ll take forward for the rest of your life.
Here at Performance Learning, we recommend doing these things in September so that you start the new school year with your best foot forward…
The ultimate back to school guide
Get a study space ready at home
Whether it’s for homework or revision, make sure you have a space carved out at home where you can focus on school work. So yes, that means clearing away your summer clutter. A tidy desk and essential supplies (such as stationary, notebooks and binder folders) within reach make it easier to focus when homework starts piling up again. Think of it as building a base camp for the year ahead.
Nail down a morning routine
You’ve probably had a few lie-ins over the summer. Which is good, because you deserved them! But we also understand that this might make the early starts in September that little bit harder. Seeing as you’ve accessed our back to school guide, it’s likely you’re thinking about routines. And in terms of morning routines, we recommend easing back into earlier bedtimes and wake-ups. That way, your body clock will adjust to the new year.
Don’t just stop there! Plan what time you need to wake up, get dressed and leave the house, and give yourself an extra buffer of 10 minutes for unexpected hold-ups. A calm, predictable routine helps stop the school run from feeling stressful.
Set practical academic goals
The start of the year is the perfect time to think about what you want to achieve. As such, goals give you something to aim for and stop the months from blurring into one long stretch. We recommend being realistic and practical with your goals. Instead of saying “I want to ace every exam,” think in smaller steps like, “I want to spend half an hour revising maths three times a week” or “I want to hand in all my homework on time this term”.
If you are preparing for GCSEs or A Levels, break your goals into manageable chunks for each subject. Exam coaching can be useful here, because it helps you set goals that actually stick rather than overwhelming you with unrealistic expectations. And with Performance Learning, our exam coaches are there to support you every step of the way.
Lean on your support system
One of the biggest mistakes students make is thinking they need to figure everything out on their own. News flash: you don’t! Teachers, parents, exam coaches and even classmates can all be sources of support if you let them. If you are confused by a topic, ask a teacher sooner rather than later. If you are feeling stressed, talk to your parents about it. And remember, study groups with friends can turn revision fun, which also means the information will stick in your brain more so than re-reading your class notes.
“Don’t be afraid to use what is available,” advises Dr Tej Samani, exam coach and founder of Performance Learning. “If things start to feel too overwhelming, exam coaching can give you the extra guidance and confidence you need to not only move forward, but thrive as you do so.”
Balance school with fun
It’s tempting to think success comes only from working harder and harder, but balance between school work and doing what you love is where the magic really happens. Time with friends, hobbies, exercise and rest all matter as much as study time. A student who burns out by November will not get better results than one who paces themselves – and it’s an issue we see all too often here at Performance Learning. Even just a walk after school or a weekend break from screens can reset your focus.
“Balance is not laziness, it is what keeps your motivation alive,” says Dr Tej.
Building strong habits early
September is when habits are easiest to set. If you start the year with a plan to stay on top of homework, use your planner properly and revise little by little, those habits will carry you through. If you leave it until January to catch up, you will likely feel stressed and underprepared. At Performance Learning, we encourage students to think of habits like muscles. The more you practise them early, the stronger they get. Even five minutes in the evening spent consolidating your knowledge from the day can make a difference by the time exams come around.
Look ahead to exam season
It might feel strange to think about exams in September, but they arrive quicker than you expect. Plus, it’s always a great idea to be as prepared as you possibly can be. The work you do now is what makes your revision more fruitful later down the line. Get used to organising notes, keeping track of deadlines and asking questions when you are unsure.
For students heading into Year 11 or Year 13, this year is especially important. GCSEs and A Levels can feel daunting, but remember that support for you exists. Whether it is your teachers, your parents or even specialist help like exam coaching, there are plenty of people that want to help you thrive.
Back to school guide, in conclusion
The 2025-26 academic year is a fresh chance to start with better routines, stronger habits and clearer goals. It’s not about being perfect from day one. Rather, we encourage you to make small changes that build over time and keep you steady all year long.
So as you head back into the classroom, see it as a chance to reset. School years go by quickly, but the habits you set now can shape not just your grades, but your confidence and life skills in the long term.
If you want extra support this year, exam coaching through Performance Learning can give you structure, tools and encouragement to make the most of the year ahead.
